Dance Archiv 04/Pulp Fiction
04/Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino, 1994 Tracing the trail Inside postmodern cultural studies the term archive is being used as memory of information and knowledge, referring to Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault. It s a project about choreography – developed as a form of writing. Notation of dance movements in film scenes is a rareness. The challenge about capturing dance scenes in films are frequently occurring camera view changes e.g. close ups of faces which interrupts the experience of viewing whole movements. The working prozess is: A first step is to find a way to understand movements, to reconstruct them, to write it down, to find a possible way of notation. To learn the movements we can get from the film scenes, to then imagine the rest of the choreography by analyzing procedures, patterns and other materials involved. *cultural knowledge means e.g. body attitudes that have already been seen, they are already part of a cultural memory.
